Protect Your Modular Horse Barn with Exterior Spring Maintenance

Keeping your modular horse barn at its peak performance requires a little spring maintenance, and below are a few helpful tips. If you’re looking for a modular horse barn, run-in shelter, or shed row style horse barn, Caroline Storage Solutions has the expertise to help you choose the right barn style for your needs. Located near Asheville, NC, we’ve delivered more horse barns and storage sheds in the Southeast than anyone else and would love to help you as well.

1. Roof to ground visual check. Winter storms often cause tree limbs to break, which can damage the integrity of the roof and walls of your horse barn. Remove them and check for roof or wall damage, which would need to be repaired right away, before it turns into any kind of serious damage. Also inspect the guttering to ensure everything is clear for the upcoming spring and summer rains, which you know can be torrential.

2. Windows and doors. Winter will often rust windows and door hinges, so use a little WD-40 on them to make sure you’ll be able to easily open them on the warmer days of spring to let the clean air in and urine odors escape. Your horses will nicker their thanks.
3. Weeds and mud. Take a look around the perimeter of your horse barn to check for weed growth that should be trimmed, or perhaps sprayed with a (safe for livestock) week killer. Weeds trap moisture, which can make your wooden barn rot. Likewise, take a look at the mud paths around the structure. Do you need a load of gravel or dirt to remedy surface water flowing toward the barn instead of away from it?

4. Equipment. Although hay elevators, lawn mowers and weed trimmers aren’t really part of your horse barn, every piece of equipment you use throughout the year for the horse barn should be given a spring maintenance once-over. It’ll save you significant frustration later.

Although these tips are basic, they are a great starting point to help ensure your modular horse barn will last for many years to come. Carolina Storage Solutions is located near Asheville, NC, and has delivered more horse barns than anyone else. If you are looking for one, give us a call.
